Introduction
Woodcutting is one of the most important skills in RuneScape. It can be used to cut logs from trees used for Firemaking, Fletching, and Construction. More importantly, Woodcutting fuels the economy with the many thousand of logs it needs, meaning this can be a very profitable skill. Good amounts of money can only be made at a relatively highlevel (75+), but it is still good for making smaller amounts at lower levels.
You start off in Lumbridge with a Bronze Axe and only the ability tocut normal trees. Since you are only able to cut one log from them at a time, and oaks aren't available until level 15, you'll be hacking your way through these trees for a while.
Tools
Axes
The axe is the tool of the trade when it comes to Woodcutting. They range from the Bronze Axe you start off with, to the Inferno Adze that actually burns some logs as you cut them, or even that Sacred Clay Hatchet that gives double experience from any logs cut.

Trees
Trees are what make the skill happen. After getting the proper axe, you'll need to find out what kind of tree it is that you'll be cutting.Trees come in all shapes and sizes around Runescape, just like theywould in real life. The majority of the trees (and other things you cancut down) are only available to members. Jungle foliage can only be cutwith a machete, not an axe.

They require level 44 Woodcuttingto wear.
These items are members only, untradable, and to obtain them you musthave completed the Priest in Peril, Nature Spirit, In Search of theMyreque, and In Aid of the Myreque quests. Also, for the Burgh de RottRamble you must have completed the Darkness of Hallowvale quest.

Random Events
There are three Random Events that can occur while woodcutting.
The first is an Ent. When it appears, a small face will show on thetree, and the tree will begin to shake. If you try to cut it, you willbreak your axe and have to get it repaired by Bob the axe salesman.
Tree spirits are the second random event. They appear at differentcombat levels depending on your own level and attack you. If you killone they drop axes, coins, uncut gems, and nature runes. If you run farenough away they will disappear.
The third event is a bird's nest, a members only drop which willoccasionally fall from a tree and onto the ground while you are cuttingtrees. Search the nest to find a ring, tree seeds, or a bird egg.Wearing a strung rabbit foot necklace will increase the chance of thisrandom event.
Previously there was a fourth random event, axe separation, which hassince been removed from the game. The head of your axe would fly off.To fix it all you needed to do was simply pick the head up, and use itwith the handle to repair the tool. Upon the removal of the event theaxe heads were reattached with handles automatically if held withinbanks or inventories.
Growing Trees
With the addition of the Farming skill, players are now able to growtheir own trees to cut. There are five locations where a player cangrow a tree. You can grow oak, willow, maple, yew and magic trees inthese spots, which are located in Lumbridge, Falador Park, Taverley,Varrock, and the Tree Gnome Stronghold. You get normal woodcuttingexperience for cutting the trees you have grown.
Canoes
Canoes are an addition to RuneScape that allows members to paddle alongthe River Lum. Every type of canoe can take you up and down the river, but only one type can take you into the wilderness. The Waka canoetakes you through an underground river into level 35 wilderness, by themoss giants and is widely used for returning in clan battles. Youcannot return by canoe in the wilderness, so make sure you want to gothere first.
To make a canoe, use your axe at the "canoe station," which actuallylooks like a dead tree. Then, once the log has fallen onto the carvingstation, use your axe with it, to create the canoe. The lower-grademetal type your axe is, the longer it takes to make a canoe.
Name | Required Level | Experience |
Log | 12 | 30 |

Minigames
There is a mini-game involving woodcutting. What this mini-gameinvolves is cutting back the jungle around the Tai Bwo Wannai Villageand repairing the fence around the village. While hacking away at thejungle with your machete, you can find one of several events. A monstermay jump out at you such as a Broodoo Victim, Bush Snake Tribesmen orsome Mosquitoes. You could also find a gem rock or uncover a raregoutweed plant.

Training
Level 1-35:
Level 1 is the starting point for all great woodcutters. At this level, you can cut normal and evergreen trees. Members can use the regularlogs they obtain from such trees, to fletch arrow shafts. A good spotto train for non-members is by draynor manor with the forest of deadtrees. At level 15, you can chop oak trees. However, these can be alittle slow, so if you stay around the same general area of Draynorwoods, you can interchange between regular trees and oaks. At level 25,you should now be able to chop oaks fast enough; continue chopping inthe forest just east of Draynor. At level 30, you can chop willows, butcontinue with oaks until around level 35 - allowing you to chop willowsfaster. Members should consider training in McGrubor's Woods, as it isnot crowded and the trees are more spread out.
Level 36-60:
From level 36, you should be able to chop willows fast enough. For Freeplayers, the best place to chop and bank your willows is DraynorVillage, just south of the bank. For Members, you can go past thewillows outside the Barbarian Assault mini game, as there are eightwillow trees, accompanied by a deposit box just inside the mini game.Willow logs can be a very good money-maker for lower levels, making upto 25k per hour. Other good spots include South of Rimmington, West ofPort Sarim, East of Port Sarim, and beside the Champions' Guild.Unfortunately these spots are second-rate, due to the fact that thereare no nearby banks. However, if you are dropping or burning your logsas you go, these places are never crowded, so are far better thanDraynor. For members, there are also large amounts of willow treeslocated by the Lady of the Lake, in Taverley. Once again, there is nobank handy for banking logs, so this spot is better for people burningor dropping their logs.
Members can also cut maple trees at level 45. Maples don't give quiteas good experience as willows, but if you are cutting for money, fletching or firemaking, then these will give a bonus over willows inthat they give more experience when fletched or burned, and sell formore. Members can make use of the massive maple tree plantation northof Seers Village, or the smaller grove just above the Seers' VillageBank. There are also several trees scattered elsewhere around Seers'Village, if you don't mind running around a bit. Barbarian Outpost hasfour willow trees, and a deposit box for banking them. They are quiet, but the lack of a proper bank may put some people off.
Free players: Willows are the best experience for free players, even at higher levels.
Members: You can continue with willows past level until yews or you canswap over to Maple Trees, in Seers Village, and outside SinclairMansion. If you are only chopping for Woodcutting experience, willowsgive the best experience until, like Free players, you can chop yewsquickly. Use a Games Necklace to quickly teleport to the BarbarianAssault mini game.
Level 60-75:
At level 60, you can now chop yew trees. Trying to do so at this level, though, is utterly pointless. The only reason you would even bother isif you are after money. However, yew logs only make around 30k-45k anhour at level 60, so it's really not worth it. There are four locationswhere free players can chop yews easily. These four free worldlocations are Edgeville, north of Varrock Castle, south of Falador, andnorth-east of Rimmington. These are also less-crowded, but moreout-of-the-way locations; north-east of Port Sarim, east of DraynorVillage, east of Varrock, and in Lumbridge Churchyard.
Members have a few more options for chopping yews, namely the verypopular grove of trees at Catherby, and the three churchyard trees inSeers' Village, as shown in the image below. There are some otherless-crowded spots as well, including several Yew trees in the TreeGnome Stronghold and Zanaris, as well as a large number in thePiscatoris hunting area.
Perhaps one of the better options, Yew trees are present in the GnomeStronghold, underneath the central bank. There are a total of 3 Yewtrees; on top of that, there is a Farming spot where Trees may beplanted. With a Farming level of 60, a player may plant a Yew tree atthis spot, allowing them to chop 4 Yew trees. The main advantage isthat it is extremely close to a bank; the bank is literally on top ofthe trees.
After completing the quest Rocking Out, you can use your locker in Rimmington to deposit the yew logs you cut.
Free players: If you are only after money, you can begin chopping yews.Otherwise, stick with willows if you are after experience. At level 70,woodcutting yews picks up a bit, although not enough to outrun willowsin experience per hour.
Members: Once again, if you are only after money, you can startchopping yews now. However, it's advisable to continue to train onwillows, or maples, until at least level 75, which is the earliest timewhere you can chop yews easily. A good place to cut willows or maplesis north of the Seers bank or outside the Barbarian Outpost.
Level 76-99:
You are an expert at woodcutting at this point. You can chop nearlyevery log in the game, and you can do it well. You should know the bestplaces to chop whatever it is you are after, but we'll cover some goodmagic tree locations all the same.
At level 75, members can chop magic trees. However, if you are afterexperience, stay with willows. Even at level 80, magic trees are veryslow. The magic tree areas are often crowded, so you also have to putup with that if you decide to chop magic trees for money. You would bebetter off chopping yews until at least level 85 before you begintrying to chop magic trees. The best places to cut magic trees aresouth-west of Lletya, south-west of Seers Village (near the Rangers'Guild), outside Thormac the Sorcerer's Tower, around the GnomeStronghold, and at the Mage training area.
Free players: The best trees free players can chop are yews, and thebest locations for yews are outlined in the previous section.
Members: Stick with yews until at least level 85, which is theearliest chopping magic trees becomes a speedy option. Even then theyare not 'fast' though. Until 85, yew trees will deliver some decentmoney, and willows will give you the best experience.
A lot of players are also cutting willow logs for very fast experience, yet the profit isn't that high. While cutting willows, you can get birdnests faster and you can sell the seeds, or either plant them yourself. To get more money, crush your bird nests and sell them to herblorists. The best place is now next to Barbarian Assault, as the deposit box isreally close to the trees.
Money Making
You have your tools, you spent forever getting your skill up, and nowyou're ready to make some cash. Well, after all that time you spentleveling up, you can now sell off all those willow logs if you bankedthem, ~17k from lvl 30-75 at 18gp a piece (market price) for a total ofaround 300k. The current price for yew logs is around 450gp. They geteasy to cut around lvl 75, so that's when your big money will startcoming in. Members can cut magic trees for money, but I wouldn'tsuggest this until a you reach a minimum level of 85, as magic treesnever reach at level at which they become "easy" to cut.
